Uganda Police spokesman Kituuma Rusoke has revealed that Police Constable Charles Bahati who shot and and killed a driver in cold blood near Kampala Sheraton hotel in December last year, has evaded arrest as his whereabouts remain unknown.

Bahati opened fire and killed Julius Ssemwaka, a truck driver on December, 23  at the intersection of Kampala Club and Sheraton Hotel, near State Lodge, Nakasero.

The deceased was shot during an altercation as Bahati who was travelling on a police patrol vehicle with other officers asked Ssemwaka to reverse for them to pass but he failed to do so due to the heavy traffic.

Police launched a manhunt for Bahati and on December 30th released his photo for the public to assist in his hunt.

Suspect elusive

However, while addressing the press today, Kituuma said the hunt for the suspect has been fruitless so far.

He added that suspects fleeing justice is not uncommon in police operations, but reassured that the hunt is still ongoing.

Bahati ran away,” Kutuuma said.

“Usually, some suspects do successfully run away; this would not be the first case of its kind.”

“We might arrest the suspect after a short while, but we also have suspects we have been hunting for for the past 10 years or more

It is not new.

A person can even go abroad. People flee from justice all the time but when we catch him we shall bring him before courts of law,” he added.

It is reported that Bahati fled the scene on a bodaboda, with his gun.
