Pastor Robert Kayanja, founder of Miracle Centre Cathedral, Rubaga, recently opened up about a surprising chapter in his son’s journey to becoming one of the senior pastors at the church.

The 62-year-old revealed in a sermon that his son, Robert Kayanja Jr, had no intention of joining the ministry and once firmly rejected the idea of preaching or pastoring.

The son’s decision, he said, sent shockwaves in the family as they had hoped for him to follow in the footsteps of the renowned pastor.

According to Pastor Kayanja, his son was intent on following through with his dreams of becoming a scientist.

“When Robert finished high school and Kabira International School, he was the best in ICT,” Kayanja recalled.

“He was going to study ICT at Georgia Tech (Georgia Institute of Technology). We also wanted to send him to an institution where he could be raised as a leader.

Pastor Kayanja added that while he never forced his son into ministry, young Robert made it clear that he wasn’t interested.

“He told us, ‘Dad, you have been dragging me to church, but I want to be a scientist.’

A Mother’s Vow and a Father’s Faith

While Pastor Kayanja initially accepted his son's choice, his wife, Jessica Kayanja, responded differently.

“His mother wasn’t okay with it. She said she had dedicated him to God even before he was born and wasn’t going to let him walk away from ministry,” he recalled.

The family eventually chose to trust in God’s promises rather than rely solely on their son’s potential in science.

The turning point came when Pastor Kayanja was appearing on TBN, and televangelist Paul Franklin Crouch prophesied about his son.

“Everything he said is exactly what Robert Jr is today,” Pastor Kayanja testified.

From Reluctance to Realisation

Speaking during the service, Robert Kayanja Jr confirmed his father’s account, revealing that he detested being a preacher.

“My parents never pushed ministry on me,” he said. “What they did push were values, family, and legacy—not the ministry.”

I told my dad, ‘I love you very much, but I don’t want to pastor your church. I don’t want to preach.’ But my mum made a promise to God, and even when I was going left, they trusted that promise,” he added.
