President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Dr. Charles Olaro as the Director General for Health Services at the Ministry of Health, the government confirmed.
Dr. Olaro, who has served in the role on an acting basis since November 2024, takes over permanently after Dr. Henry Mwebesa’s term ended.
Museveni later named Mwebesa as chairperson of the Health Service Commission.
The Ministry of Health thanked Dr. Olaro on X, saying, “Congratulations Dr. Charles Olaro on your appointment as Director General Health Services.”
They noted he previously served as Director of Clinical Services and stepped into the acting role in November 2024.
Before this, Dr. Olaro worked as director of curative services at the Ministry of Health.
He spent eight years at Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital, joining as medical superintendent in 2008 and later becoming a senior consultant surgeon and hospital director.
From April 2001 to June 2008, he served as medical superintendent and consultant surgeon at Arua Regional Referral Hospital.
Between 1992 and 2006, Dr. Olaro held roles as a medical officer special grade, senior house officer, and medical officer at Arua, Mulago, and Lacor Hospitals.
The appointment strengthens leadership in Uganda’s health sector as the country tackles ongoing challenges.
