Buganda Prime Minister Charles Peter Mayiga has weighed on the controversial map of Uganda, which recently made waves in the media.

The map caused a stir due to the absence of the Buganda region, the largest ethnic region in the country.

While the map includes all the regions, namely Acholi, West Nile, Karamoja, Bunyoro, Lango, Teso, Bugisu, Bukedi, Tooro, Ankole, Kigezi, and Busoga, the prominent Buganda region is conspicuously absent. In its place, the map has instead “North Central and South Central.”

Speaking on Tuesday at Bulange Mengo, where he hosted Pastor Alysious Bugingo of the House of Prayer Ministries, Mayiga added his voice to the map controversy, stating, however, that the government had acknowledged their mistake and rectified it.

Map origin

The Premier revealed that the map originated from the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS)  back in 2018.

After it came out, he said, the Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi, aired his concerns on the omission of the Kindom from the Uganda map.

This was during his birthday celebrations held in Vira Maria in Masaka.

UBOS apology

Subsequently, according to Mayiga, UBOS officials paid him a visit at Bulange Mengo, where they officially apologised.

“Just four days after the Kabaka’s message, the UBOS team led by its board chairman came to us and apologised,” he said.

“They informed us that they were simply doing their data reporting work and that they were not being malicious. They said the mistake had been rectified, and we accepted the apology.”

As such, Mayiga allayed the prevailing concerns of the people of Buganda, noting that the kingdom cannot be erased from Uganda.

“It is not possible to get rid of Buganda… It is like saying that Bulange is not in Mengo,” he said.

“How do you get Buganda off the map? Do you just carry it away and dump it in Tanzania?  No one can take Buganda from Uganda because it is the cornerstone on which Uganda was built."

At the function, Mayiga received a contribution from the House of Prayer Ministries towards the upcoming annual Kabaka Marathon ahead of the monarch’s 70th birthday.
