TotalEnergies EP Uganda and SLB have provided a big boost to oil and gas training in Uganda, handing over specialised education software and computer hardware to Makerere, Kyambogo, and Nkumba Universities.
This initiative is part of their ongoing commitment to strengthening Uganda’s oil and gas sector by enhancing the capacity of educational institutions to equip students with relevant technical skills.
At the handover ceremony, Mr. Philippe Groueix, General Manager of TotalEnergies EP Uganda, emphasized the importance of supporting educational institutions to develop the capacity to train more Ugandans in oil and gas disciplines.
He said the support aligns with their commitment to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, which focuses on quality education.
“Over the years, we have placed great emphasis on supporting educational institutions such as Makerere and Kyambogo to enhance training in oil and gas, and today’s handover is a further step in this direction,” said Mr. Groueix.
The support includes eight computer hardware stations for each university, comprising tower servers, monitors, and peripherals, valued at over USD 200,000 (UGX 770 million).
Additionally, SLB has donated four specialised training software licenses—Petrel, Techlog, Eclipse, and Petromod—installed on the provided systems. These platforms are crucial for bridging the gap between classroom theory and practical field applications in the oil and gas sector.

Valerian Pfrimmer, Managing Director for East and South Africa at SLB, underscored the importance of the software in enhancing petroleum geoscience and engineering education.
“These platforms are essential for real-world operations, and they cover the full spectrum of exploration and production,” he said. SLB will also conduct training sessions for university staff in July 2025 to ensure effective use of the software, which will continue to receive annual license renewals.
The handover ceremony was attended by university representatives, including Prof. Juma Kasozi from Makerere University, Dr. John Okuonzi from Kyambogo University, and Prof. Jude T. Lubega from Nkumba University, who expressed their gratitude for the support.
The event was also witnessed by representatives from the Petroleum Authority of Uganda, Joint Venture Partners (CNOOC and Uganda National Oil Company), and EACOP Ltd.
This initiative complements other training and capacity-building programmes by TotalEnergies, including the Tilenga Academy and internship opportunities, which aim to further support national content development in Uganda’s oil and gas sector.
