Denmark unveils $95 Million support package to fight corruption in Uganda
The focus will be on fighting corruption by boosting government transparency, strengthening democratic institutions, promoting sustainable solutions for refugees and climate change, and fostering a green transition.
The Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) will oversee the implementation of these programs. Danish Ambassador Her Excellency Signe Winding Albjerg highlighted the importance of supporting refugees.
"We want to see how we can make the refugee response more sustainable... We are debating what kind of solutions can build the resilience of the communities and help support the continued hosting of the refugees."
Ambassador Albjerg also emphasized Denmark's commitment to promoting transparency in Uganda.
"The Danish Government will support local CSOs involved in promoting the use of digital tools to ensure accountability," she said, mentioning initiatives like using social media to expose corruption.
The program will allocate resources towards climate change initiatives as well. The focus will be on promoting climate-smart agriculture and agribusiness, while also encouraging private sector involvement in climate change adaptation strategies.
Government grateful
Hon John Mulimba, the Ugandan State Minister for Foreign Affairs, welcomed the Danish support.
"I thank the Kingdom of Denmark... for the support towards achieving our objectives," he remarked, acknowledging the long-standing partnership between the two countries in various development projects.
The launch event also featured a replica of Denmark's annual "People's Meeting," an event where citizens have the opportunity to directly interact with government officials on a range of issues. This element reflects Denmark's commitment to fostering open dialogue and public participation.
