The minister last week expressed concern about the young people using social media and other platforms to denigrate others, including those of older age.
“Parents, you need to guide your children not to pay attention to the abuse that is happening on social media and on radios where people are even threatening to kill others,” she said.
“How can you start saying that when we are still gathering remains of our forefathers in a country that is still fragile like this and you start threatening violence and genocide?” She said.
The minister made the call at a function held to celebrate the golden jubilee of All Saints Church Kalasa in Makulubita Sub County, Luwero district.
In her speech, the Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to elevate its young population.
This she said was one of the reasons for the recent review of the education curriculum at both primary and secondary levels.
“The review was necessary because we were following that left behind by the colonialists and yet it has not been helpful, other than churning out unskilled graduates who end up unemployed,’ she said.
“Uganda is now developed; we have oil and other minerals which we discovered and yet our children know nothing about them because they never got to learn about them.
“We need to teach them now about these from when they are still young so that even if they don’t finish university; they are able to do something for themselves.”
Meanwhile, Hon Kaboyo announced her ministry’s plan to turn Kalasa into a permanent venue for the annual Heroes Day celebrations, which are held on June 8th.
“I know that this region has many districts and some people might want it on a rotational basis, but I think that we should be meeting here every year to remember our people. We are currently working on a cabinet paper on this matter,” she said
All Saints Church Kalasa was attacked in 1982 by Milton Obote soldiers, who killed five of its members including the catechist, Timothy Ssembiro.
The Minister said plans are underway to construct a bush war museum in Migadde.
Presiding over the function, the Acting Luwero Bishop James William Ssebaggala congratulated the church on reaching the 50-year anniversary.
The Bishop rallied the residents to reflect on the history of this region and guard against repeating the mistakes of the past.
“Our people were killed in this very Church including its head. It is important for us as Christians that we never forget these events, lest we repeat the same mistakes” he said.
The event was graced by Mama Ruth Nkoyoyo, the wife of the late former Archbishop Mpalanyi Nkoyoyo who donated cement toward the construction of a new commercial building for the church.
