On April 6, 2025, Police Constable (PC) Suleiman Chemonges, attached to Bishehe Police Station in Ibanda District, was killed by a mob at the funeral of Kahangire Lazarus in Kambogo Cell, Bishehe Division.
Kahangire, who was accused of attempted murder, had been in police custody at Nyabuhikye Government Prison before his death. He was arrested after evading capture for his alleged crime.
At around 2:00 PM, PC Chemonges was attacked by a mob at the funeral grounds. The mob accused the officer of involvement in Kahangire's arrest and detention.
Despite firing warning shots to defend himself, the mob overpowered him and killed him. Police later found an SMG rifle with 16 rounds of ammunition at the scene.
They transported Chemonges' body to Ruhoko Health Centre Mortuary for a postmortem.
The Uganda Police Force condemned the act, stating, "We have arrested 29 suspects linked to the murder and are continuing our search for others involved."
The force assured the public that those responsible will be held accountable.
This tragic incident has drawn widespread attention, with the Uganda Police urging the community to stand against mob justice and ensure that justice is served in a lawful manner.
