Major General Jack Bakasumba, Chief of Joint Staff of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), has praised the “cordial” military relationship between Uganda and Nigeria, urging further collaboration between the two nations’ armed forces.
While hosting a 30-member delegation from the Nigerian Army War College at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs Headquarters in Mbuya, Maj Gen Bakasumba highlighted the significance of the regional study tour.
The Nigerian officers are in Uganda to learn from the UPDF’s experience and expertise.
Maj Gen Bakasumba credited President Yoweri Museveni’s leadership and Pan-African vision for Uganda’s strong military capabilities.

“We have built a solid capacity to train our forces and carry out operations, thanks to our President’s Pan-African spirit,” he said.
He also stressed the UPDF’s commitment to regional peace, underscoring that African solutions are essential to resolving African challenges.
“We do not share borders with Somalia, but because of our ideological clarity and willpower, we do not rely on foreigners to fight for us. We have the capacity to handle our security,” he added.
The UPDF Chief of Joint Staff thanked the Nigerian delegation for choosing Uganda as their destination, viewing it as recognition of the UPDF’s growing influence in the region.

In support, Maj Gen Richard Otto, Chief of Intelligence and Security, reiterated the UPDF’s dedication to both internal and external peacekeeping missions.
“The UPDF remains committed to providing security and to peacekeeping missions,” he affirmed.
Leading the Nigerian delegation, Major General Umar Alkali, Commandant of the Army War College Nigeria, thanked the UPDF for the warm reception.
He acknowledged the importance of such visits in fostering cooperation, noting, “It is a great honour and privilege to be hosted here. We have learned a lot, and tours like this are vital for us.”
