Spanning 13 months from February 2024 to February 2025, this consultancy phase is a critical step towards addressing long-standing water supply challenges in these cities.

The project, announced on Tuesday by NWSC Managing Director Eng. Dr. Silver Mugisha, promises to extend its benefits to several surrounding towns, focusing on developing and upgrading critical water and sanitation infrastructure.

Dr. Mugisha disclosed that this ambitious initiative is supported by a grant from the Agence Française de Développement (AFD). The grant will fund consultancy services necessary for the feasibility study, which is crucial for the advancement of water and sanitation infrastructure in the selected cities.

Highlighting the financial aspects, Dr. Mugisha stated that a contract worth 1,099,823.50 euros (approximately Shs4.54 billion) has been signed with the Seureca and Artelia Consortium, with Warner Consultants Ltd serving as subcontractors. These firms are tasked with conducting detailed feasibility studies for both water and sewerage infrastructure, a project aligned with the President's commitment to ensuring water accessibility in the newly established cities.

Dr. Mugisha emphasized the project's alignment with the President's vision and its potential impact on over 1,050,000 residents. The plan includes constructing a conventional water treatment plant, rehabilitating and expanding existing sewer networks, and enhancing water and sanitation services for the urban poor.

Addressing the current challenges, the NWSC MD pointed out the inadequate sewer network coverage and the declining efficiency of existing water supply systems. He also highlighted specific issues in Fort Portal, where the River Mpanga's water quality is compromised, and in Hoima, where groundwater sources are proving unreliable and insufficient.

Spanning 13 months from February 2024 to February 2025, this consultancy phase is a critical step towards addressing long-standing water supply challenges in these cities. Dr. Mugisha urged the consultants to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery of their services, reiterating NWSC's commitment to stabilising water supply in the affected areas.

The project is part of a broader initiative by NWSC, with similar efforts underway in Mbarara, Tororo, Masaka, Jinja, and Moroto. The corporation's efforts have garnered support from the President of Uganda and the Ministry of Water and Environment.

Representing the Seureca and Artelia Consortium, Christopher Lacaring, pledged adherence to the project timeline and budget, highlighting the consortium's extensive experience and past successes in Uganda. He committed to an inclusive and collaborative approach in executing the project.

In addition to the three cities, numerous town centers in Fort Portal, Lira, and Hoima are set to benefit from this project, marking a significant stride in improving water and sanitation facilities across the nation.
