The arrest of singer Shafik Jjingo, also known as Fik Gaza, has taken another turn as police announced that additional charges have been levied against the artist.

Fik Gaza, alongside his co-accused, remains in custody at Katwe Police Station, awaiting further investigation and court proceedings.

Initial Charge Amended

Fik Gaza, who was arrested last Thursday during a police operation targeting his home in Makindye, was initially accused of aggravated robbery.

However, after consultation with the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), the charges were amended to simple robbery.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, told reporters this morning that DPP’s directive was followed by the Katwe Police, and the file has since been updated accordingly.

Onyango clarified that the suspects were scheduled to appear in court last Friday, but the change in charges required further processing.

Meanwhile, Onyango revealed that additional “aggravated robbery” charges are being bought onto the singer and his colleagues, following the emergence of another file.

“There is another file that has emerged from Wakiso Police, and that is for aggravated robbery,” Onyango explained.

Wakiso detectives, he said, have requested that Gaza and his co-accused remain in Katwe Police custody until they can take their statements, concerned that the simple robbery charge might allow Gaza to secure bail before further investigations into the aggravated robbery file could be completed.

Additional Charges and Potential Court Appearance

The police spokesperson confirmed that Fik Gaza and his colleagues might be arraigned before the court either today or tomorrow, depending on when the Wakiso detectives arrive to take statements.

Onyango reassured the public that the delay in court proceedings is not an attempt to stall the process but a necessary precaution due to the emerging new charges.

Fik Gaza, who has denied the robbery allegations, has publicly claimed that his arrest is part of a conspiracy to sabotage his career. He took to social media to refute the charges, alleging that they were fabricated by people aiming to tarnish his reputation.

Murder charges

However, the situation has grown more complicated with the involvement of one of Gaza’s co-accused, Charles Zziwa, also known as Muzungu. In addition to robbery charges, Zziwa is now facing murder charges and is wanted for escaping lawful custody after being taken for medical treatment.
