Magogo’s son summoned for U20 AFCON provisional squad
Shafiq Magogo, son of the Federation of Uganda Football Association boss Moses Magogo, is among the players that have been summoned for the U20 Africa Cup of Nations camp.
In the provisional squad released on January 10, former Uganda Cranes legend Jackson Mayanja named Shafiq Magogo among his options for forwards in the provisional squad.
Mayanja summoned a total of 50 players for the residential camp and will face the daunting task of trimming his squad by half.
Magogo will try to emulate his famous father who featured for Mutundwe Lions and Kinyara FC. However, unlike his father (who now at the helm of the Ugandan football administration) who did not feature for the national team, Shafiq Magogo has featured for the national side on a number of occasions.
In 2019, he was part of the Uganda U15 team that featured at the CECAFA championships making the final cut of 20 players summoned fir the tournament. Under a FIFA programme, the inaugural tournament held in Eritrea was organised to develop football at youth levels.
In 2020, he also made the final cut for the CECAFA U17 championships representing Uganda in Rwanda.
Magogo has featured for a number of clubs at the youth levels including Edgars Youth Programme, UPDF, KCCA SA, among others.
Speaking at the announcement of the provisional squad, U20 team coach Jackson Mayanja noted that the camp will be competitive as selection will be based on merit.
"We are going to use this time to fully assess and examine the players and all decisions we shall make will be based on merit, meaning players must work hard to prove the technical team," he noted.
The team is camping at FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru.
The U20 Africa Cup of Nations Egypt 2023 will be played between 19 February and 11 March 2023.
