The party’s nomination process started last week after over 100 party members picked nomination forms for different party positions.
This new development comes against the backdrop of the recent delegates conference, which saw party members belonging to the party chairperson's camp pass a resolution to fire both Mafabi and Amuriat from their respective positions.
While being hosted on KFM, a Ugandan radio station, Amuriat rubbished the new development, saying the delegates conference was illegal in the first place after the Court issued an injunction stopping it from happening.
“What has happened is confirmation that Besigye and colleagues have always wanted to destroy me. The delegates conference was illegal in the first place given that the Court issued an injunction stopping it from happening,” he said.
Party members also resolved to suspend Geofrey Ekanya and electoral head Toterebuka Bamwenda.
The conference attracted quite a number of party members, including party officials from upcountry areas such as Busia.
During the event, police also used teargas to disperse top members of the FDC who wanted to attend.
The conference was planned to be in Busabala, but it was shifted to Katonga Road offices as police blocked access to the initial venue. Roads leading to Katonga were also blocked by police amidst a standoff.
Mafabi earlier declined to fund the delegates conference, saying Biriggwa did not inform the party organs in time.
Mafabi said that Birigwa did not inform the party organs, including the secretary-general, who is the principal accounting officer of the party.
In a letter he issued on September 2, Mafabi said that Birigwa only made mention of the delegate’s conference in the media without officially informing the party’s organs.
Birigwa had earlier indicated in the media, during the height of tensions between party members, that the FDC would be holding a delegate’s conference. This followed demands from some party members who thought that it would be good for the party to have the conference to iron out burning issues.
