Minister Odongo bids farewell to UNICEF boss after 4 years

Gen. Odongo Jeje Abubakhar, Uganda's Minister of Foreign Affairs, recently met with Dr. Munir Safieldin, the outgoing Country Representative for UNICEF, as he wraps up an impressive four-year tenure in Uganda.

Dr. Safieldin also revealed plans for the United Nations to inaugurate its first UN-owned premises in Uganda, situated in Mbuya.

During their meeting, Dr. Safieldin expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Ugandan government for its unwavering support and collaboration. He labelled his time in Uganda as the pinnacle of his 31-year career, which has spanned 11 countries. Dr. Safieldin praised Uganda's renowned hospitality and its open-door policy, which has provided a refuge for thousands fleeing conflict in neighbouring nations. He commended the country’s role in fostering peace and stability in the region.

Dr. Safieldin also revealed plans for the United Nations to inaugurate its first UN-owned premises in Uganda, situated in Mbuya. He expressed hope that President Yoweri Museveni and Gen. Odongo would attend the ceremony.

In response, Gen. Odongo acknowledged Dr. Safieldin’s invaluable contributions, particularly during the tumultuous COVID-19 pandemic. He recognised UNICEF’s crucial role in helping Uganda navigate the crisis, which included reducing fatalities and tackling post-pandemic challenges like school dropouts and the rehabilitation of young mothers.

The Minister reiterated Uganda’s commitment to its open refugee policy, citing the nation's history of conflict and its empathy for those affected by war. He commended President Museveni for his firm stance that no African should suffer if Uganda can offer sanctuary.

Hon. Gen. Odongo welcomed the news of the new UN premises, assuring that the Ugandan government would be well-represented at the inauguration. He also pledged full support to UNICEF’s incoming Country Representative and wished Dr. Safieldin a prosperous future.
