This was revealed by the party’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, while addressing party members at the delegates conference organised by Wasswa Birigwa, the party’s chairperson.
"I have been directed by the chairperson to read for you proposals that have been made in writing. These include: extension of the FDC leadership term of office and organs by six months from October 8th; putting in place an interim electoral commission to organise transparent, free, and fair elections," he said.
Ssemujju added, "Suspend the following from the leadership of the party: Patrick Amuriat, Nandala Mafabi, and Geofrey Ekanyi. During their suspension, their deputies, Erias Lukwago, Francis Mwijukye, and Harold Kaija, will perform the duties of these offices."
The delegates conference, which was held at Besigye’s Katonga offices, attracted quite a number, including party officials from upcountry areas such as Busia.
During the event, police also used teargas to disperse top members of the FDC who wanted to attend a national delegate conference organised by party chairman Wasswa Birigwa on September 19, 2023.
Pulse Uganda has learnt that the conference was planned to be in Busabala, but it was shifted to Katonga Road offices as police blocked access to the initial venue. Roads leading to Katonga have also been blocked by police amidst a standoff.
It should be noted that the court had earlier issued an injunction stopping the delegated conference. Birigwa's faction, however, defied the injunction and went on with the event.
