I found out I had a son when he was a-year-and-a-half-old – McKenzie

“In 2011,” the KIIS FM radio host, who also goes by Kella McKenzie, said in an interview, “I found out that I had a child.”

His son, Nate, was one and a half years old at the time of finding out. 

“In 2011,” the KIIS FM radio host, who also goes by Kella McKenzie, said in an interview, “I found out that I had a child.”

McKenzie was 22 years old and the baby mama was 21.

He attributed not finding out earlier to “miscommunication.”

“... when I found out he was mine,” he said, “I was like, I'm taking full responsibility."

He said he didn't want to be the kind of father who meets his son when he is already a grown-up and finds himself in awkward conversations with their child.

"As much as it was controversial, to me, it was the best thing that ever happened because it opened my mindset to understanding life itself,” he said. “... there is more to this than just being selfish and doing your own things."

After finding out he was a dad, among other reasons, Kella Mckenzie decided to take a break from radio hosting. At the time, he was with Hot100 FM, whose frequency was acquired by the company that currently employs him. At KIIS FM, a sister company to Capital FM and Beat FM, he hosts a morning show.

Meanwhile, when he left Hot100 FM, he continued hosting Jam Agenda at WBS.

It’s during the break from radio that he was tapped to join Radio City.

Bryan Mckenzie Sabiti lost both his parents at a young age. The mother died when he was 16 and the father when he was just three months.

He went to different schools, including St. Aloysius Primary School, St. Joseph’s Vocational Mbarara, St. Lawrence (London College) and Makerere University where he dropped out of a bachelor's degree in Tourism.

McKenzie, who joined radio hosting when he was still in S.6, has worked with a number of media companies, including Power FM, Kampala FM, Hot100, Radio City, Urban TV, KIIS FM and WBS.

He has also tried singing and has recorded songs with Atlas, Keko, GNL and Rabadaba. It’s The Mith who told him to stop singing after recording a song with Atlas and Keko.

While in high school, McKenzie to a dance group called Western Face.
