The recent death of Rajiv Ruparelia, a prominent Ugandan businessman, has ignited fresh concerns over road safety in Uganda.
His tragic passing highlighted the urgent need for improved road infrastructure and stricter adherence to safety regulations.
In response, Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, has called on all Ugandans to ensure that no lives are lost on the road.
“Every life matters,” Wamala said in a statement issued following Ruparelia’s death. He emphasised that the public must strictly follow prescribed safety instructions to prevent further tragedies.

Despite ongoing efforts to improve the country's road network, road crashes have remained a persistent issue. According to the Uganda Police Annual Crime Report 2024, 25,107 road crashes were recorded last year, with 5,154 fatalities.

Wamala attributed these crashes to several factors, including human behaviour, road conditions, and vehicle maintenance. He pointed out that speed alone accounted for approximately 45% of these accidents.
“The Ministry is committed to delivering safe, reliable, and efficient road infrastructure, but we face challenges like the vandalism of road signs,” Wamala said.
“I urge the public to help protect these assets and report any concerns so that we can take immediate action.”
The Minister also highlighted the importance of road construction projects currently underway across Uganda. These projects aim to address critical safety concerns and create safer environments for all road users.
As road safety remains a top priority, Wamala urged all road users to take responsibility for their safety and the safety of others on the road.
