Former US President Joe Biden, aged 82, has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has metastasised to his bones. The diagnosis was confirmed on Friday after Biden sought medical attention for urinary symptoms, leading to the discovery of a prostate nodule.

His medical team reported that the cancer has a Gleason score of 9, indicating a high-grade and aggressive nature of the disease.

Despite its severity, the cancer is hormone-sensitive, which allows for effective management through treatments such as hormone therapy.

Given Biden's age and the advanced stage of the cancer, surgery is not considered a viable option.

Instead, his medical team is exploring hormone therapy and other treatments to manage the disease.

Climate Voters Still Want More From Biden

Prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death among American men, and while early detection has improved survival rates, recent years have seen more late-stage diagnoses.

Following the announcement of his diagnosis, Biden has received an outpouring of support from political leaders across the spectrum.

Former President Donald Trump expressed his sympathy, stating that he and First Lady Melania Trump were "saddened to hear about Joe Biden's recent medical diagnosis" and wished him a "fast and successful recovery."

Former Vice President Kamala Harris also extended her well-wishes, stating that she and her husband Doug Emhoff are keeping the Biden family in their prayers.

Biden's diagnosis has drawn attention to the challenges of ageing and health in public life, particularly among older political figures.

As the oldest person to have served as U.S. president, Biden's health has been a topic of public scrutiny throughout his career. His diagnosis underscores the importance of regular health screenings and timely medical intervention.
