The documentary titled “Survivor Complex” is premiering tomorrow, September 26.
It chronicles Renee Bach, the American missionary who started up a clinic supposedly caring for malnourished children in Jinja.
At the time she came to Uganda, Bach was only 19 years old with no medical training at all. Yet she ran the facility from 2010 to 2015, where 115 children died.
It was reported through investigations that she performed medical procedures like inserting catheters, drawing blood, performing transfusions and injections, prescribing and administering medications, and more — all without paying attention to basic health, safety, and hygiene guidelines.
Bach was dragged to courts of law in 2019 and she agreed to settle the matter out of court. She paid each one of the families that lost their children at the facility USD 9500 (about Shs 35 million). The total payout to the family was nearly USD 1 million.
Both in Uganda and at home in the US, Bach was strongly vilified in the media, taking on titles such as “Angel of Death,” “DIY Doctor” and “Doctor Evil.”
However, according to the recently released trailer, the documentary seems to paint the woman as an innocent philanthropist caught up in a misunderstanding.
“I think some of the most wild accusations that were made about me is that I killed 800 children, I was medically experimenting on children,” Bach laments at the start of the trailer.
“Compared to Adolf Hitler, assumed to be part of the KKK … It’s kinda like, where to begin, you know?”
The trailer has prompted criticism from many who believe the documentary is platforming Bach and giving her a microphone to "defend" her actions, which is offensive considering the immense harm she allegedly caused.
“Isn’t it interesting that white people that cause harm are always “misunderstood.” If anyone has a victim mentality it’s people with privilege and power. Renee Bach is a murderer who violated the human rights of hundreds of African children,” wrote one X user.
“HBO is trying to profit from serial child killer Renee Bach. The 'white savior' complex that has always been enforced by poorly governed African countries wins again,” wrote another.
An online petition to have Bach held accountable had nearly 3,000 signed.
