CHAN 2023:‘Bad luck’ bites as Uganda, DRC settle for 0-0 draw

Uganda Cranes settled for a goalless draw against neighbours Democratic Republic of Congo in the Africa Nations Championships group stage opener.

In an evenly braced encounter, neither side found the breakthrough with Uganda being denied by the woodwork. A number of chances were wasted by both sides as they settled for the spoils.

DRC could have opened scoring in the 10th minute with Nzali’s free-kick and Nafian Alionzi calmly made the save.

Moses Waiswa was also gifted chance to give Cranes the lead but the ball wide sending players on the bench into bitter moment of frustration.

Nzali, was at it again for DRC but also sent his effort to the side-net after an impressive tun into Cranes backline.

In a physically charged match and high tempo, Uganda had its best chance in the second half. Gift Fred’s header was denied by the woodwork in what could have been the difference.

Micho would made several changes in his offensive bringing on Nelson Senkatuka, and Mutyaba Travis for Milton Karisa and Frank Ssebufu but the much-needed breakthrough did not come to pass.

DR Congo and Uganda sit joint top of Group B ahead of the Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal fixture at the same venue.
