Double Q, which has operated in Uganda since 2013 has grown its portfolio to the stage of setting up a fully-fledged truck assembly plant in Mpigi, where hundreds of trucks are being produced both for the local market and export across the border in South Sudan, Rwanda, Tanzania, and DRC.
Speaking as Chief Guest at Double Q’s 10th-anniversary celebrations at the company’s head offices in Busega on Saturday, Government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo hailed the work done by the company so far.
Having earlier visited its plant Mpigi and seen the opportunities being offered to Ugandan employees there, Opondo praised Double Q for championing foreign domestic investment in the country.
“You opened Uganda to the rest of the world and showed that it is possible to do business in Uganda,” Opondo said.
“Through your work, you have now connected Uganda to the DRC, Southern Sudan, Tanzania, and Rwanda; thereby strengthening the spirit of the East African integration.”
“When I visited your plant on Masaka Road I was happy with your employment policy where you are taking raw Ugandans and training them to become the best-skilled manpower,” he added.
Opondo on behalf of the government, assured the company of continued support through improving conditions of doing business and investment in the country.
Double launched its operations in Uganda in 2013, offering mostly transportation services. With time they ventured into spare parts and other services until 2019 when they rolled out the assembly plant.
Mr Bruce Lin Double Q's Managing Director said so far, they have manufactured over 600 units which are being mostly exported to neighboring countries.
The company, he said, employs over 300 Ugandans, and this number is expected soon to jump to 500.
“We are also happy with the transformation we have brought to this place; when we came here there was almost nothing, but now the place is transformed. More businesses are coming up, and our neighbors are supplying us with food and other services,” said Mr Lin
Double Q is also involved in a lot of corporate social responsibility with a focus on supporting education in the country.
At the anniversary event which was graced mostly by the company's business partners, Double Q handed out an assortment of prizes to lucky winners as a sign of appreciation.
Some of the prizes included washing machines, television sets, fridges, phones, and a brand-new Mercedes Benz which was won by Matthew, a businessman from DRC.
