Subscribers on Lyca Mobile across Uganda woke up Saturday morning to a blackout, sparking panic and speculation.
The UK-based company, which initially entered the Ugandan market in January 2020, remains one of the cheapest mobile internet service providers.
Users, however, were unable to access its internet, call services or load data through the morning, sparking widespread panic.
Speculation
This was followed by a flurry of claims on social media that the network was ceasing operations in the country.
The rumours were fanned by ineffective communication from the company as its customer lines were unavailable.
Company speaks out
However, officials inside the company informed us later that the outage was caused by a major fault.
The issue, they said, was being resolved, and that restoration was expected within the next 24 hours.
Since commencing operations in Uganda, Lyca Mobile has successfully acquired one million subscribers and extended its network to several urban centres in all parts of the country.
