The 7th Absa Bank Captain’s Bell Golf Tournament concluded in spectacular fashion at the Uganda Golf Club (UGC) Kitante on Saturday evening, leaving both participants and spectators in awe.
Over three exciting days, the tournament showcased fierce competition, historical triumphs, and an unforgettable celebration that encapsulated the spirit of the game.
The tournament began with a bang, as Joseph Cwinyaai made his mark on UGC history by tying the course record with a remarkable 63 on day one.
Powered by nine birdies, Cwinyaai finished an impressive 16 strokes ahead of rising star Anthony Otukei, who put up a strong performance but could not catch up. In the Ladies Gross Amateur category, Peace Kabasweka reclaimed her title, finishing with a composed 234 over 54 holes, outpacing Harriet Kitaka.
Among the professionals, Deo Akope demonstrated his enduring class with a masterful 11-under-par 277 over 72 holes, securing the top prize from a UGX 20 million prize pool. Akope’s performance reinforced his position as one of Uganda’s top golfers, and the win was a testament to his skill and consistency.

The legendary Afrigo Band took to the stage, delivering a sensational performance of crowd favourites such as “Obangaina,” “Maria,” and “Nantongo.” The performance brought nostalgia and rhythm to the evening, electrifying the crowd and creating a perfect end to the tournament.
At the dinner, Absa’s Managing Director, David Wandera, spoke about the bank’s continued commitment to supporting golf in Uganda.
“As we support this tournament for the 7th year running, our UGX 179 million investment this year reflects our deep commitment to growing golf in Uganda, nurturing talent, and celebrating moments that bring us together as a community,” Wandera said. “Today’s prizes and this party are our way of rewarding the excellence we have witnessed here.”
Following the awards, re-elected UGC Club Captain, Paul Charles Rukundo, rang the Captain’s Bell, marking the beginning of another year of leadership at the Uganda Golf Club.
