On Saturday, June 3, 2023, Nyeko, 68, who left the Bank of Uganda in March 2015, passed away at the International Hospital in Kampala.

Nyeko's son Sam Otim said that his father had for long been suffering from liposarcoma, a rare form of cancer that affects fatty tissue.

According to Otim, his late father's sickness began in 2018 and he received medical care up until the time of his passing on Saturday night.

His successor at Bank of Uganda Susan Wasagali Kanyemibwa noted, “the late gave hope to the hopeless at the Central Bank.”

Her decision, she says, comes after witnessing the marginalisation of elderly people, particularly in her home district of Kanungu, Western Uganda, which inspired her to stand for election.

Kanyemibwa who spoke during a vigil held in Nyeko's honour on Sunday night in Mutungo said the deceased played a crucial role in making her who she is today.

I stand here to give testimony that I am what I am today partly because of Nyeko,” she said.

For six years, I served as his direct subordinate as director of Board Affairs. He oversaw, guided, and then pushed me into the deep end, telling me, "You will sail,” she continued.

Nyeko had risen through the ranks of the Bank of Uganda's many departments during the course of nearly 32 years of employment.

His wife Jolly Nyeko, along with their four children, Ken Olara, Sam Otim, Lois Aber Kwikiriza, and Eunice Asiimwe Nyote, survived him.

Nyeko worked for Bank of Uganda for three decades before he eventually retired in 2015 leaving Susan Wasagali Kanyemibwa as his successor.
