This is the story of Janice Kemigisha Mzungu—a young woman whose passion for digital content creation has been both empowering and challenging, particularly against the backdrop of her conservative family upbringing.

Her journey reflects a delicate balancing act between personal ambition and deeply rooted societal expectations.

At 23, she has grown into a notable presence across social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter), using these channels to tell stories that resonate with diverse audiences.

Yet, her rise as a digital content creator was not without resistance. Her family's initial reaction was rooted in fear—fear that her public persona would diminish her perceived worth and limit her future prospects.

Uganda, a nation largely shaped by traditional values, often defines a woman’s worth through the lens of cultural and familial ideals. Kemigisha’s upbringing in a strict extended family meant that her foray into social media was initially met with disapproval.

For her relatives, the idea of a woman being visible and expressive in the digital space conflicted with the reserved image expected of a woman of value.

Her digital journey began at university, where she received her first smartphone.

With excitement and curiosity, she explored social media platforms that had gained popularity during the lockdown. Inspired by her older siblings and the creativity she observed online, she decided to try her hand at content creation.

“I got my first phone at University. I was excited and curious at the same time about these social media platforms everyone was talking about.

"TikTok had become during lockdown. I didn’t have a phone, but I had seen my older siblings use the platform. I had seen quite a number of people use the platform to express themselves and it’s something I thought I could give a try,” she says.

Despite the early criticism from home, she remained undeterred. What may have started as an experiment soon evolved into a full-fledged career. Interestingly, the very values her family instilled in her—discipline, self-respect, and cultural consciousness—have shaped her digital persona.

Though she produces a range of content spanning dance, acting, and lifestyle, these values have anchored her, helping her maintain a sense of integrity and authenticity in a space often characterised by fleeting trends and overwhelming pressure.

Her upbringing continues to influence key decisions in her digital career.

For instance, she is mindful of how she presents herself, particularly in terms of dress and content choices. While some may view her modesty as outdated or unengaging, Kemigisha sees it as an expression of her identity.

She refuses to compromise her principles for the sake of virality or engagement.

Living two lives

Navigating multiple cultural spheres, Kemgisha has at times felt like she’s living two lives. In an effort to appeal to both luganda and elite audiences, she has had to adapt her content strategy, eventually embracing a hybrid approach that blends languages, styles, and cultural references.

Initially resistant to producing local content, she later recognised the need for inclusivity, especially as her digital platform evolved into a professional pursuit.

“When I was starting out, I made a decision that I would not do local content, but with time, I realised it was a rigid mindset. I decided to make content that appeals to a wider audience. But this is also because doing digital content became a job for me and I had to change my mindset,” she says.

Nevertheless, she remains cautious not to lose herself in the process. She draws clear boundaries, turning down opportunities that may conflict with her beliefs, such as appearing as a video vixen in music videos. While global trends often tempt her to push limits, she is careful to weigh the cultural implications of each decision.

Janice’s journey is a testament to the complex intersection of tradition and modernity. As she continues to grow her brand, she does so with an acute awareness of her roots, proving that it is possible to thrive in the digital age without abandoning one's identity
