Uganda Cranes falls short despite Impressive start at CHAN

After an impressive start, all the team needed was a draw to break their Quarterfinal-jinx and progress to the last 8 for the first time in the last 6 attempts.

The thrilling encounter at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers was simply put, a golden opportunity for the Uganda Cranes to make history.

With everything at stake, the Uganda Cranes still failed to stand up to the challenge.

The dominant Ivorians were instead the first to react, taking control of the game through neat strikes from Karamoko Sankara and Vignon Ouotro.

The Uganda Cranes managed to get a reprieve and convert a spot kick before the break thanks to Moses Waiswa’s calm finish.

Despite multiple close calls, the Uganda Cranes couldn’t find inspiration to break the Ivorian compact Defence.

The Ivorians, who started at the bottom of the table with just a point to show in two games, have progressed to the knockout stage for the second time and are joined by Senegal who beat DR Congo to lead the group.

This is only the second time that the Ivory Coast have progressed from the group stages having finished third at the 2016 edition in Rwanda.

Côte d’Ivoire will now face hosts Algeria in the first quarterfinal matchup on January 27.
