Police in Masaka have in detention a 34-year-old woman in connection to the death of her teenage boyfriend.
Pamela Mutesi is accused of sneaking 19-year-old Frank Akankwasa Jr, out of his parent’s home to a beach party, where he met his death.
Police say Akankwasa is believed to have been murdered, although Mutesi insists he drowned.
Forbidden love
Grace Mbabazi, the mother of Akankwasa said Mutesi had been dating her son for the past 5 years even though she is married to another man.
Her attempts to separate them, she said, proved futile as her pleas to the Kyabakuza police to intervene bore no fruit.
“I once found her in my son’s room and beat her up. She told me that soon I would cry the same tears I made her cry,” narrated Mbabazi.
“I even sat down with (Mbabazi’s) husband to have this matter resolved but he told me he had given up on her.”
Akankwasa’s demise
On the fateful night, according to police, Mutesi called Akankwasa multiple times and lured him off to the beach party.
Mbabazi told the press at Masaka Police Station that Akankwasa’s death was purely accidental.
She said they, together with other partygoers were hanging out at a campfire in the night when Akankwasa snuck off and went into the lake.
Moments later, she said, they were called about a person who had vanished into the water.
“By the time they pulled him out, he was unresponsive. We tried to give him first aid and rush him to hospital but it was too late,” she said.
Police in Masaka said they arrested Mutesi after a coroner’s report concluded that the deceased was killed, judging by the injuries found on his body including scratches around his neck.
“We are still looking into the possibility that he was killed and dumped into the water,” said, Twaha Kasirye, the Greater Masaka Police spokesman.
Two other people, Mukasa Sserwanja and Sudhir Musinguzi who were with the deceased were arrested along with Mutesi to help police with the investigations.
