The announcement was made by Michael Segwaya, Absa Bank Uganda’s Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer, during the prize-giving ceremony at the Uganda Golf Club.
The top ten golfers from the 2024 Absa Pro-Am Tournament of the Uganda Golf Open have earned a chance to participate in the prestigious 2025 Magical Kenya Open. This opportunity, provided by Absa Bank Uganda, offers a platform for both professional and amateur golfers to gain international exposure and enhance their skills on a global stage.
"We are driven by the desire to be a force for good in the community, and this support will provide our Ugandan players the opportunity to enhance their skill and gain international exposure by participating in the prestigious Magical Kenya Open," Segwaya said.
He added that such opportunities have contributed significantly to the growth and recognition of Ugandan golfers, citing Ronald Rugumayo's historic achievement as the first Ugandan to make the cut for the DP World Tour, a success attributed to Absa’s continued support.
The top ten slots from the Absa Pro-Am are divided between the professional and amateur categories. However, selected professional golfers must still qualify according to the criteria set by the Magical Kenya Open. Any professional slots that are not utilized will be offered to the next best amateur players. In addition to the Kenya Open slots, the top three professional winners from the Absa Pro-Am Tournament were awarded a total of UGX8 million in cash prizes.
The Magical Kenya Open, established in 1967, has grown to become one of Africa’s premier golf tournaments and is now part of the European Golf Tour. Participation in this event provides valuable international exposure, helping local golfers to compete at higher levels and gain recognition in the golfing community.
The Absa Pro-Am Tournament serves as a unique platform where professional golfers are paired with amateurs, offering professionals an extra practice round before the Professionals Open and helping amateurs improve their skills in a competitive environment. This format encourages mentorship and skill development, benefiting both professional and amateur golfers.
Absa Bank Uganda has been a consistent supporter of the sport, sponsoring various tournaments, including the Captain’s Bell, and facilitating the participation of amateur golfers in international events like the Magical Kenya Open.
These initiatives reflect Absa’s commitment to promoting sports as a tool for community development and personal growth.
"At Absa Bank Uganda, we believe in the power of sports to unite communities and inspire individuals. By investing in events like this, we aim to encourage the spirit of healthy competition and provide a platform for local talent to thrive," Segwaya stated.
