Serena Williams teases unexpected return to action following Instagram message

23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams will make an unexpected return to the tennis court as she has revealed that she will play at Wimbledon. Williams has not played a tournament in almost a year since suffering a leg injury in last year’s Wimbledon.

Williams took to her Instagram handle and posted a picture which she captioned: “SW and SW19. It’s a date. 2022 See you there. Let’s Go #renasarmy.”

This announcement comes as a surprise because Williams was not on the initial entry list, only changing her mind at the last minute.

In the last few years, Serena has struggled with injuries and the few people that hoped she would make an appearance at this year's Wimbledon expected her to do so using a protected ranking.

Since her injury last year, Williams’ ranking has suffered a major blow, as the 23-time Grand Slam winner has fallen to 1,208 in the WTA rankings, the lowest she has been in nearly two decades.

Even though she is 40, the other competitors will be wary of the threat she brings any time she takes to the court. In terms of trophies, no other player has as many Wimbledon trophies as Williams, who has won an unmatched seven.

Her most recent Wimbledon win came in 2016, but she came close in 2018 and 2019 after returning from maternity leave to lose to younger opponents in the final.
