Museveni wants Uganda to host Afcon in 5 years' time

President Yoweri Museveni reportedly wants Uganda to host the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027, just 5 years from now.

Museveni addressed the nation

Well, Uganda could be bidding to host the Africa Cup of Nations in the near future, according to National Council of Sports, General Secretary Dr Bernard Patrick Ogwel.

While speaking on NBS-TV, Dr Ogwel said the president has 'informally' requested the NCS to look into the issue of hosting the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027.

"President Museveni has informally requested us to look into the issue of Uganda hosting the African Cup of nations for 2027, this shows the strides we are taking in sports", he said.

Ogwel's statement comes a time when Uganda does not have a national stadium fit to host the FIFA/CAF certified matches.

SC Vipers' St Mary's Stadium is the only CAF accredited stadium licensed to host international football matches.

For Uganda to host the matches, the government will then need to invest heavily in sports infrastructure and construct at least 5 stadiums fit for international football.

Largely hosting the Afcon has been a West Africa, North Africa and Southern Africa affair leaving East Africa in the cold due to lack of sports infrastructure.
