Ozil spent three full seasons with Ronaldo as teammates and went on to lay 31 assists for the marksman in 149 games.
Ozil blasts media for constant negativity towards Ronaldo
Mesut Ozil has come out in defence of his former Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo in the wake of fresh media reports over alleged ‘indiscipline’ by the star in the Portugal World Cup camp.
According to reports, Ronaldo allegedly threatened to leave the camp following the decision by coach Fernando Santos to bench him in the Portugal last 16 win over Switzerland.
Santos and Ronaldo have since dismissed the rumours.
Now, Ozil says the media is constantly giving the star negative press for sake of selling news.
“I really don't get where this constant negativity from the press about Cristiano comes from ... The Media is just trying to get clicks, and pundits who don't have a career anymore just want to get attention with his big name and try to make him look bad”.
He defended Ronaldo’s lack of goals in recent games noting that at 37, he cannot be expected to perform as in the younger past.
“He is soon 38 years old - so what's the surprise that he doesn't score 50 goals a season anymore? Every football fan out there should be happy to have seen him playing world class football for 20 years - I don't think anyone from the new generation will be able to match his numbers again. He will forever be in his own category”, Ozil adds.
“Everyone should show more respect to one of the greatest athletes in sports history...”
