U-18 Qualifiers: Victory for Uganda as Junior Gazelles qualify for FIBA Championship

The Uganda women’s junior sides, the U-18 side have qualified for the FIBA U18 Africa Championship in Madagascar due next month.

Junior Gazelles are Zone V Champions

The junior gazelles and Tanzania went into the winner takes it all match with a clear-cut assignment; the dream ticket to Madagascar.

Junior gazelles got down to business buoyed by the home crowd at the MTN Arena, Lugogo to win 63-43.

In the first quarter, the gazelles broke the ice after 5 minutes to take 8-0 lead and went on to win 16-8. The girls maintained the lead in the second quarter and held onto the offensive style of play whilst keeping the defense effective.

The gazelles had several shining stars in the decider with Nantongo Sylvia carrying the day with game high 17 points and 11 rebounds, Mariam Namukwaya scored 10 points and 10 rebounds and Gertrude Nyamutooro scored 10 points.

What the win means for Uganda

The junior gazelles will take part in Afrobasket Championship July 23 to August 7 at the Mahamasina Sports Palace in Antananarivo.

The team returns to the continental stage for the 4th time after participation in 2008 (Tunisia), 2016 (Egypt) and 2018 (Mozambique).

The Madagascar tourney is yet another opportunity to book a ticket to the 2023 FIBA U19 World Cup in Madrid, Spain.
