Wrap Up: Uganda at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham

Team Uganda has delivered a memorable performance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Birmingham, winning a total of five medals.

Uganda scooped three gold medals and two bronze to finish 15th overall and 4th in Africa in the final medal standings.

Long distance athlete Victor Kiplangat set the ball rolling registering Uganda’s first medal winning gold in the men’s marathon. Kiplangat posted a brilliant finish of 2:10:54.

Jacob Kiplimo made up for Joshua Cheptegei’s absence and won both the 5,000m and 10,000m races. Cheptegei was ruled out due to injury he sustained at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon.

Kiplimo had to beat strong competition from Kenya contenders in both finals.

In 10,000m, he posted 27:09:19 ahead of Kenya's Daniel Ebenyo and Kibiwott Kandie. The win made it Uganda's fifth gold medal at the 10,000m finals in a row.

Boniface Kiprop opened the gold medal podium to Uganda in 2005 Melbourne, Moses Kipsiro won it back-to-back in 2010 New Delhi and 2014 Glasglow and Joshua Cheptegei, the 2018 Gold Coast.

In the 5,000m finals, he clocked a time of 13.08.08 to eclipse Kenyan duo of Nicholas Kipkorir Kimeli and Jacob Krop who settled for silver and bronze respectively.

Peruth Chemutai suffered a nasty fall in the 3,000m Steeplechase finals to settle for a bronze medal. Before the unfortunate incident, she seemed destined for either gold or a silver.

Teddy Nakimuli won bronze in boxing making her Uganda’s first woman to achieve the feat.

Team Uganda was represented a by a total of 12 sports disciplines but only two; athletics and boxing made it to the podium. However, there was a great performance from other sports disciplines.

Notably, away from the medal standings, the Uganda senior netball team, the She Cranes defeated Africa’s number one ranked team South Africa to end the Commonwealth Games in the fifth position globally.

The win makes the She Cranes the top-rated team in Africa. The net ballers registered wins against Trinidad & Tobago, Malawi and Northern Ireland in the group stages.

Also worth noting, the Uganda Rugby Sevens grabbed attention registering a number of statement wins and a 12-all draw against world champions Australia setting a placement match against England.
