World Athletics ranks Uganda No.5 in 'Top 10 Men’s Track Nations'

Uganda has been ranked number 5 in the Top 10 Men’s Track Nations in 2022’ by World Athletics.

Cheptegei has bagged $70,000 (Shs263m) and Kiplimo (Shs82m) while silver-medalists Shs131m.

World Athletics, formerly known as the International Amateur Athletic Federation and International Association of Athletics Federations is the international governing body for the sport of athletics, covering track and field, cross country running, road running, race walking, mountain running, and ultra running.

In the list released by World Athletics, United States of America takes the first position, followed by Kenya, Great Britain and Canada.

Uganda, Jamaica, and Ethiopia were all tied on the same points (20) with the three nations sharing the number 5 spot.

The other African nation in the top 10 is South Africa rated at number 10.

World Athletics owes the rankings to the performances at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, Eugene, USA where Uganda produced a number of memorable finishes in the men’s track and field.

Joshua Cheptegei won gold and Jacob Kiplimo bronze in the 10,000m finals. Cheptegei joined the exclusive league of Ethiopian greats Haile Gebrselassie, Kenenisa Bekele and British track and field legend Mo Farah - the only humans to have won back-to-back world 10,000m championships.

Oscar Chelimo settled for bronze medal in the 5,000m finals.
