Top athletes rewarded with luxurious cars, Shs100m bonus & Shs5m salary till retirement

Uganda’s top athletes are smiling ear to ear after the government rewarded them with luxurious cars, cash bonuses up to Shs100m and also pledged to enlist them on government payroll to receive a monthly salary worth Shs5m.

The athletes hosted recently at State House by President Yoweri Museveni, Minister for Education and Sports Janet K. Museveni were rewarded for their gallant performances in various international competitions including the World Athletics Championships, Commonwealth Games, among other disciplines that excelled.

At the World Athletics Championships, Eugene, Oregon, USA, team Uganda finished 16th overall with three medals; two bronze and one gold with Joshua Cheptegei winning gold in 10,000m, Kiplimo bronze in 5,000m and Oscar Chelimo won 5,000m.

Cheptegei joined the exclusive league of Ethiopian greats Haile Gebrselassie, Kenenisa Bekele and British track and field legend Mo Farah - the only humans to have won back-to-back world 10,000m championships.

However, he could not make it to the Commonwealth Games due to injury.

Jacob Kiplimo made up for Joshua Cheptegei’s absence and won both the 5,000m and 10,000m races. Long distance athlete Victor Kiplangat gold in the men’s marathon. Kiplangat posted a brilliant finish of 2:10:54.

Teddy Nakimuli won bronze in boxing making her Uganda’s first woman to achieve the feat.

Janet reiterated Uganda’s commitment to sports development noting there is substantial investment in infrastructure.

“Government is making substantial investments in sports development. We're hopeful that when the construction of Teryet High-Altitude Centre and renovation of Namboole Stadium are complete, we'll have standard facilities not only for training but also for hosting international sports events”, she noted.
