Redemption as Solomon Mutai conquers Venice Marathon

Left out of the 2022 World Athletics Championships and Commonwealth Games teams, Solomon Mutai has bounced back winning gold at the 2022 Venice Marathon in Italy.

A classic marathon, the Venice race carries an IAAF Bronze label with a fine picturesque view of the Italian city’s historical land marks that starts in Stra and through Mestre, Parco San Giuliano and Ponte della Libertà and ends at Riva dei Sette Martiri.

The Bukwo born athlete posted an impressive 2:08:10 to conquer the 36th edition of the marathon beating Kenya’s Emmanuel Rutto Nabei who clocked 2:09:41 while 2015 World Athletics Championships, Beinjing bronze medallist Ethiopian Abebe posted 2:09:53 to clinch the third position.

This win means Mutai has earned a ticket to the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary next year August having beat the grueling qualification time of 2:09:40 joining compatriots Victor Kiplangat, the Commonwealth Games marathon champion and Stephen Kissa, who have posted faster times.

A prominent member in Uganda’s athletics team and 2018 Commonwealth Games silver medallist, Mutai was not included in the 2022 Oregon World Athletics team and the Commonwealth Games, Birmingham. The victory will be redemption for the 30-year-old long distance athlete.

In the women’s elite race, Kenya’s Lucy Karimi took the podium crossing the finishing line in a time of 2:28:12 breaking the marathon record in the women’s category.

The Kenyans posted a 1-2-3 podium with Rebecca Kangogo Chesi posting 2:29:14 and Caroline Jebet Korir 2:29:46 to take silver and bronze respectively.
