Uganda is competing in athletics, archery, basketball 3x3, cycling, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, weightlifting, para swimming, judo, shooting and wrestling. A total of 45 athletes are representing Uganda in the various sports disciplines at the games.
Kukundakwe bags 6 medals, Chebet 2 in Turkey
Uganda has bagged a total of 8 medals so far in the ongoing 2021 Islamic Solidarity Games in Konya, Turkey.
The Games, originally scheduled for July 2020 suffered a number of setbacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kukundakwe competes in freestyle, butterfly and backstroke; SB8 (breaststroke) and SM9 (Individual Medley) which were reviewed at the World Para Swimming World Series 2019 in Singapore.
In Turkey, Kukundakwe has bagged 6 medals; 2 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze and budding long-distance athlete Abel Chebet has claimed 1 silver and bronze in men’s 10,000m and 5,000m respectively.
Kukundakwe won the 400m Freestyle S9 event in the ongoing Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation (ISSF) Games in Konya, Turkey on day one of the events and has now added a 200m IM Gold medal.
She won the 200m individual medley posting 3.17.24 minutes, added a silver in 50m freestyle. She went for gold in 100m breast stroke and settled for silver in 400m freestyle. At the Commonwealth Games, Kukundakwe represented Uganda in only a single event and came short of the medal bracket.
Considered a star for the future, Abel Chebet posted 13:54.93 in the 5,000m finals to settle for bronze.
The medals have hoisted Uganda to the eight position on the 8th position in Turkey.
