Cheptegei defended his 10,000m World Athletics Championships title in Oregon. The feat means he the exclusive league of Haile Gebreselassie, Kenenisa Bekele and Mo Farah as the only athletes to have won back-to-back world 10,000m championships.

In a well-executed tactical masterplan, Stephen Kissa, Joshua Cheptegei and Kiplimo, kept changing hands leading at the front to keep Ethiopians, Kenyans at bay. Kissa started off leading at the front as the pace-setter, stretching out the pack before briefly handing over to Kiplimo and finally Cheptegei.

Speaking to Reuters, Cheptegei says he wants to continue his dominance.

"It was very emotional for me to come back to the USA where I started my international career in 2014 (winning the world junior 10,000m title in Eugene)," he said.

"Now, I want to continue my dominance in the long distance running and I hope I will manage it."

In reaction to the performance, he added that the sunny condition in Oregon was deterrent to athletes.

"I knew that if I get into the last fight, I can control it and I could speed it up”.
