Cheptegei, Kiplimo skip national cross-country championships

Uganda athletics crème Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo, the gold and silver medalists at the World Cross-Country Championships skipped the national cross-country championships, a precursor qualification event for the world championships.

Cheptegei  bagged $70,000 (Shs263m) and Kiplimo (Shs82m) while silver-medalists Shs131m in Oregon.

The 2023 World Athletics Cross Country Championships will take place February 2023 in Bathurst, Australia.

Cheptegei is the reigning champion having won gold in Aarhus in 2019 while Kiplimo bagged silver medal.

The two distinguished stars were a no-show at the national cross-country championships held in Tororo over the weekend.

Cheptegei is reportedly still nursing the knee injury he sustained at the World Athletics Championships, Oregon, USA, in August, 2022 while Kiplimo is reported to have withdrawn at the eleventh hour.

In their absence, teenager Martin Kiprotich won the race posting a time of 29:35 ahead of Isaac Kibet (29:43) and Samuel Kibet (29:46).

In the women’s race, seasoned athlete, Stella Chesang, the 2018 Commonwealth 10,000m champion, took the day posting 33:57. She beat Prisca Chesang (34:06), Annet Chelangat (34:13) and Doreen Chesang (34:26), Mercyline Chelangat (34:3).
