Tarehe Sita is the day the UPDF marks the attack on Kabamba barracks in 1981 which launched the five-year struggle that brought the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Government to power 36 years ago. The day is celebrated every 6th of February.
UPDF to rehabilitate over 1000 schools in Ankole
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has revealed plans to rehabilitate over 1000 schools in Ankole sub-region as they celebrate their 42nd Tarehe Sita anniversary.

The army spokesperson, Brig. Gen. Felix Kulayigye, said several activities have been lined up ahead of the celebrations due next week with an ongoing camp underway in the Ankole region.
This year’s Tarehe Sita anniversary is being held in Ankole sub-region under the theme: “Recognising the sacrifice of the founders of the People’s Revolution for Social Economic Transformation.”
The NRM Government came into power in 1986 following a five-year bush war in Uganda that had more than six rebel groups involved.
After the National Resistance Army (NRA), the NRM rebel outfit that fought the bush war, emerged victorious, it was transformed into the UPDF, which is currently headed by General Wilson Mbadi, the Commander of Defence Forces.
The Army is now present in about six African countries where it is engaged in peace keeping operations.
There have however been concerns from the public about the continued kidnap and torture of the NRM Government political opponents.
The opposition has cried foul the most and currently has about 32 supporters in custody over alleged terrorism charges. The opposition says the charges brought against their supporters are unfounded and therefore uncalled for.
