Muslims in Uganda are reportedly divided by several factions in the shape of the Tabliq sect which is divided by the faction at Market Street and the one at Nakasero. Then there is the Kibuli faction and the Bukoto-Natete faction while another faction exists at Old Kampala. All of these factions are constantly at cross purposes.
Ugandan Muslims propose a constitution to unite them
The Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, has said the infighting amongst Muslims in Uganda is not caused by a difference of opinion in matters of faith. Rather, he insists, disagreements between Muslims arise out of greed for material gain and power.
Mubaje offered this view about the said factionalism as he swore in the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) Constitution Review Commission at a function held at Old Kampala Mosque. He added that the extant UMSC constitution was put in effect in 1986, adding that he is experienced in matters affecting the Muslim community in Uganda.
“Before being elected the Mufti in the year 2000, I was Kadhi Bugisu Muslim district for ten years and for twenty-one years in the Mufti’s Office. So, over these years we have gained vast experience that led us to know its strength, weakness, and challenges,” said Mubaje.
Sheikh Obeid Kamulegeya said that all Muslims must take part in framing the proposed constitution, alongside the current UMSC leadership.
However, he added, qualified sheikhs must lead the way in ensuring the final document embraces and expresses Islamic tenets, an idea the Mufti accepted.
The members of the Constitutional Review Commission were therefore advised by Mubaje to exhibit the highest qualities of a team working towards the completion of a constitution which guides and guards the Islamic faith.
The committee members are include Prof Edris Serugo Kasenene, Dr. Kibwana Adam,Hassan Baylor, Haj Mudathir Doka,Dr. Zaid Swaleh Lubanga Sheikh Abubakar Yusuf Musoke,Sheikh Yusuf Isah Byekwaso,Haj Faraj Isah Salim ,Haj Tezikuba Mutwalib Sajjabi ,Haj Yusuf Mayanja among others.
