COVID-19 task force to present status report to President Museveni

President Yoweri Museveni is due to meet the task force on COVID-19 to receive a brief on the status of the disease in the country ahead of the planned reopening of the economy.

Dr Chris Baryomunsi

The Minister of Information, Communications Technology and National Guidance, Dr Chris Baryomunsi, confirmed that Prime Minister, Robinah Nabbanja, will present the report which contains guidelines to be followed after opening up.

Already, however, Ugandans have been given a foretaste of things to come.

The government of Uganda announced a week ago that it will block access to places of worship, schools, markets, hotels, restaurants, bars and all public places to those who are not fully vaccinated when the economy fully opens up in January.

Dr. Chris Baryomunsi said that the cabinet decided that this measure was necessary to curb the spread of Covid-19.

“We (cabinet) approved a recommendation from the Ministry of Health to extend the vaccination mandate to different categories of workers. A vaccine mandate means if you are not vaccinated, businesses, schools or workspaces and others can legally stop you from accessing their services if they choose to,” Dr. Chris Baryomunsi said.

“This means that we (government) shall not compel Ugandans to get vaccinated. Getting vaccinated is voluntary but workplaces, business premises, organisers of events have rights legally to stop you from accessing those areas if you have not been vaccinated,” he added.

Again, the Ministry of Health recently confirmed new coronavirus cases in Uganda, bringing the total number of cases to over 134,000.

COVID-19 infections, the ministry revealed, are increasing in Uganda, with 445 new infections reported on average each day.

The Ministry of Health spokesman said they were concerned about the surge in COVID-19 cases in the country.

"The cases are increasing, so people need to remain vigilant," Mr. Emmanuel Ainebyoona, the health ministry's spokesman, said.

On October 28, President Yoweri Museveni said that by the end of December 2021 the country will be ready for a full reopening of the economy.

However, with countries around the world returning to lockdowns or more restrictions tending towards the same, Uganda’s task force on COVID-19 is likely to present a status report which urges similar measures.
