According Obed Turyasingura, an eyewitness who survived the attack, they were attempting to chase the herd of elephants that had invaded their gardens around 10:00pm. However, one of the elephants left the herd and charged at Nuwamanya. He tried to flee but it was too late as the elephant ran him over a couple of times crushing him to death.
Stray elephant kills resident in Kasese
A resident of Bigando village in Kitswamba sub-county, Kasese district, identified as Osbert Nuwamanya was killed last night by a stray elephant from Kibaale National Park.

Turyasingura appealed to the government to avail more protection in the form of ranger posts and electric fences to ward off the constant attacks from the wildlife.
Following the incident, the councilor of Rugendabara parish in Kitswamba sub-country, Bridget Mure said that these elephant attacks have become a constant threat to residents in the area. She asked the government to extend compensation to victims families under the compensation clause in the Uganda Wildlife Authority Act.
Uganda Wildlife Authority communications officer, Bashir Hangi, said that they are doing the best they can to dissolve this human-wildlife dissension.
The deceased becomes the fifth victim of these elephant attacks within a period of two years.

Earlier this year in January, an elephant in the same park trampled Sebastian Ramirez Amaya, a Colombian researcher who was at the park to doing research on Chimpanzees. A few weeks later the same fate befell a Saudi tourist, Ayman Sayed Elshahany, when he left his friends to relieve himself.
A few days ago, an elephant attacked a 70-year-old woman, Maya Murmu, in India, on her way to collect water. She was rushed to the hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. During the funeral, the same elephant returned and trampled the corpse.
