Violence in Kayunga as MP Zaake is beaten

After Bobi Wine was barred from campaigning for National Unity Platform (NUP) party flag bearer, Harriet Nakwede, who faced off against National Resistance Movement (NRM)’s Andrew Muwonge, in the LC V chairperson by-elections In Kayunga District, violence has erupted.

Hon Zaake,

The burning hot race due to take place on Thursday, December 16, 2021 after the death of the LC 5 Chairmain Ffeffekka Ssekibogo in June, has degenerated into brawls as NUP MPs including HON Francis Zaake have been pummeled by security personnel.

To further set the stage for calamity, teargas and bullets have been sprayed across Kayunga.

In this powder keg situation, Zaake, Mityana Municipality Member of Parliament, has been mauled badly as Police and the Military are still deployed at Bobi’s home in Magere to block him from going to Kayunga today.

On the flipside, it seems to be a walk in the park for President Museveni who is set to address two scientific meetings at Kayonza Sub-county in Bbaale Constituency and Busaana in Ntenjeru North Constituency.

According to Bobi Wine, the contrast with the battery his party is facing could not be more stark and naked.

“Too much violence meted out by our leaders in Kayunga. Several of them have sustained severe injuries. Hon. Zaake has been badly beaten by SFC soldiers and he’s now currently admitted at a hospital in Jinja. The most critical question to dictator Museveni is, if you fear elections why do you organize them? Your murderous regime is on its way out, no matter what you do!” Bobi tweeted with pictures of the victims.

Kayunga district is a bellwether battlefield which will test the strength of NUP and NRM in Buganda.

During the presidential election in January, NUP defeated at least 10 NRM ministers in the central region, Buganda.

Bobi Wine snagged 34 per cent of the total votes as central Uganda hoisted the tribal vote to take Kampala, Wakiso, Mukono, Mityana and Masaka.

This could be why the NRM has pulled out all the stops with President Museveni arriving after weeks of campaigns by NRM bigwigs such as Secretary General, Rt. Hon Richard Todwong, the Deputy Secretary General, Namayanja Rose Nsereko, Director for Mobilization Hon Rosemary Sseninde Nansubuga, Director for communication, Hon Emmanuel Dombo Lumala and other officials from the Office of the National Chairman.

It has not also been forgotten that the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon Robinah Nabbanja, had also campaigned in support of the NRM flag bearer.

As the race turns bloody, one can only wonder which candidate will emerge victorious this Thursday.
