Museveni made this comment when receiving the US Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, who called on him at State House, Entebbe.
Leave Africa out of your quarrel with Russia - Museveni tells US
President Yoweri Museveni has asked the US government to leave Uganda and Africa at large out of the sanctions it has imposed on Russia.
Greenfield, who will be touring three African countries, embarked on her African tour in Uganda where she held talks with Museveni on regional and security matters among others
The US envoy said Uganda has longstanding ties with the US; ties renewed continuously by mutual interests.
She extended warm greetings from President Joe Biden to President Museveni, describing Museveni as a bastion of stability in the region.
“We acknowledge Uganda’s peace mission in Somalia. Your mission has made a difference,” she observed.
Museveni, in turn, commented on food security in Uganda, saying the high cost of fuel is disrupting the transportation of commodities to markets, thereby driving prices up and causing food inflation.
“The problem here is fuel. When fuel prices went up food prices also went up but we have food like bananas, cassava, millet and sweet potatoes. Although we had drought, we still have plenty of food,” Museveni said.
He then appealed to the US envoy to exempt African countries from the sanctions since the high cost of fuel is driving skyward the prices of commodities due to soaring transport charges.
“If you really want to help the third world, why don’t you leave the third world out of these sanctions in a conflict where we are not participating. The priority here is the high cost of fuel which is affecting the price of commodities due to high cost of transport,” Museveni said.
Museveni promised in June this year that he would engage the US and Russia on the issue of fuel, his recent talks with the Russian and American envoys seem to be a fulfillment of this promise.
