Gen Mbadi tells UPDF troops in Somalia to be selfless, disciplined in service

The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Wilson Mbadi, has urged troops of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) in Somalia to serve selflessly and diligently with the utmost regard to soldierly discipline.

Gen. Mbadi speaks to troops

Mbadi made these remarks as he paid a visit to several Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) including, among others, Arbiska, Baledogle and Mogadishu base camp while holding huddles with the rank-and-file of the troops.

The CDF thanked the UPDF for placing duty above self in Somalia and in other parts of Africa

“I’m here to thank you for the work well done, you have served well and represented Uganda effectively,” he said.

Mbadi further urged the troops in every FOB to continue cleaving to maximum discipline.

Before you do anything first ask yourself if it is professionally, legally, spiritually and morally correct,” he advised, adding that they should always follow their moral compass before taking any course of action.

He briefed the troops on the security situation in Uganda and the region, adding that their efforts will come to naught without peace and security.

“Money fears insecurity,” he said, as he reminded them of their role in bringing about peace and security in the country and region at large.

He also outlined and itemised what the UPDF is doing to improve their welfare in the shape of accommodation, medical care, education of their children, salary enhancement among others.

The deputy Commander UPDF Land Forces Maj Gen Sam Okiding thanked the troops for serving diligently.

“We are proud of you for making Uganda shine, we walk with our heads high wherever we go and you have done a tremendous job,” he said.

The Ugandan contingent commander in Somalia, Brig Gen Keith Katungi, said it is a moral booster to the foot soldiers in operation areas when commanders from strategic leadership talk to them.

We are grateful for your coming here and we will do the same to the troops,” he said.

Uganda was the first to deploy troops under AMISOM into Somalia in March 2007. The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) is a regional peacekeeping mission operated by the African Union with the approval of the United Nations Security Council.
