Military driver who shot boda-boda rider at school, arrested

The Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) has arrested the driver of a Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) vehicle, who shot and killed a boda boda rider at Kawanda Senior Secondary School yesterday morning.

Luke Owoyesigire, Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson, confirmed the arrest of the suspect, Abdul Ssali, who is said to have shot and killed Ronald Waligo, a boda boda rider and resident of Kirinya Bigo, Kawanda in Wakiso District.

"CMI personnel have arrested Ssali and he is in their custody on murder charges," Owoyesigyire said.

The incident happened at the school gate after the two were involved in an altercation. According to Police, Waligo was shot in the left shoulder and the bullet exited out the right shoulder, killing him on the spot.

Following his arrest, Ssali told the CMI officers that he was attacked by a couple of boda boda riders who attempted to beat him in front of his Senior three daughter whom he had picked from school closed for third term.

He allegedly shot Waligo in self-defence.

According to policee preliminary investigations, Ssali was leaving the school when he met with traffic jam at the gate.

“The road being narrow, this prompted him to squeeze on the side where the deceased had parked. This caused an altercation after Waligo complained to the driver of being squeezed which attracted a big group of riders that also condemned his action," Owoyesigyire said.

The suspect went to his car and picked a gun that he used to shoot Waligo before fleeing.

Police tracked down Ssali using CCTV camera footage to get the car details and directions it took which led CMI officers to him.

“The number plate of the said vehicle has been identified by the police as H4DF 1939," Owoyesigyire said.

The motorcycle, a Bajaj Boxer UEG 721c, that police suspect to belong to the deceased, was recovered. Ssali is in police custody on murder charges.
