Authorities in Mozambique are holding three Ugandans suspected to be part of a terrorist cell associated with al-Shabaab.

The three suspects were arrested during an operation in areas believed to be operational bases for terrorists.

A provincial police spokesperson said in a press briefing that the three suspects, including a woman, had confessed being members of the al-Shabaab militias operating in Uganda.
Abdul Rahman Faisal, one of the suspects believed to be the leader of the terrorists’ cell, told a press briefing that indeed is a member of al-Shabaab of Uganda.
"I am from al-Shabaab of Uganda. We came to Mozambique to look for Mansour and Abdul Aziz who was my subordinate in Uganda, but the last time he saw him was in the Democratic Republic of Congo."
He said he was in Mozambique on a mission to find missing colleagues he identified as Mansour and Abdul Aziz.
"I received the mission to come to Mozambique to look for him (Abdul Aziz) because he is involved in crimes."
Mozambique has continued to intensify operations against terrorism following several attacks in 2017.
The southern African nation has arrested over 100 people over terrorism allegations for the last two years.
