Man commits suicide after being forced to reconcile with his wife

A man in Bududa district has allegedly committed suicide after being forced to reconcile with his wife. The deceased’s wife had reportedly left him five years ago to relocate to Kenya.

The police are investigating the reason behind the man's suicide

Paul Masika, a resident of Rulale cell in Buwanabisi ward in Bududa town council in Bududa district allegedly killed himself after his clan members and officers from Bududa police station had ensured that he and his wife had buried the proverbial hatchet.

Robert Malingati Kuloba, the area LC I chairperson, says that the relationship between husband and wife suffered a split due to the couple’s irreconcilable differences

Fred Namatati, the brother to the deceased, says that he saw him entering an agroshop only to find him dead hours later from having consumed two bottles of an insecticide.

The Suicide mortality rate (per 100,000 population) in Uganda is reported to be at 4.6 %, according to the World Bank collection of development indicators, compiled from officially recognised sources.

Police are also investigating why a man committed suicide after he allegedly failed to find a job two years after his graduation from university.

Brian Wetaka, a resident of Ntinda, graduated with a Bachelor’s degree of Science in Chemical Engineering from Kyambogo University in 2019 but failed to translate his degree into gainful employment.

Thus, he went back to his former lecture room at Kyambogo university and committed suicide, says Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire

Wetaka allegedly took his life at Kyambogo university’s Engineering Building at about 8am, last Friday.

The police were informed about the incident by a private security guard, who guards the building, and officers responded,” Owoyesigyire said.

The deceased’s body was taken to city mortuary at Mulago for a postmortem while police’s forensics team are scrutinising a supposed suicide note left behind by the deceased before his death.

Our scene of crime investigators we were also able to recover a suspected suicide note with wordings “I have decided to end my life because of stress.” It has been exhibited and our experts are analysing it,” Owoyesigyire said.

The employment situation continues to suffer from shocks as part of the global pandemic and the usual economic circumstance in the country.

Currently, the unemployment rate is said to be at 2.30 percent and is projected to drop to 2.00 percent in 2023, according to economic experts.

In Uganda, however, the unemployment rate measures the number of people actively looking for a job as a percentage of the labour force.

According to this employment model, it is thus hard to get an actual fix on who is unemployed and who is not.

Recently, however, Bank of Uganda (BOU) revealed that the country’s economy started to turn the corner in 2021.

In that year, it was stronger compared to the previous year (2020) because of the gradual easing of covid-related restrictions.

The economy is estimated to have bounced back in 2021, growing in the range of 6.5-7.0%, although it came after a 1.5% contraction in 2020 as the pandemic forced parts of the economy to shut,” Michael Atingi-Ego, the BOU Governor said.

Indeed, the high-frequency indicators of economic activity for October 2021 to January 2022 suggest that the economy was on a strong rebound.”

The Ugandan economy has taken several knocks since the pandemic occasioned a nationwide lockdown on Monday, March 31, 2020.
