Homosexuality in schools on rise - Parliament

Members of Parliament have raised concerns over the increasing cases of homosexuality and lesbianism in schools.

While addressing the Parliament, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, said some schools have been turned into recruitment centres for the gay community.

These schools are now recruitment centres. Some of these children and their parents are dying in silence. We need the Committee on Education to look into this matter and we find solutions. This cannot go on like this. Some of the boys in a certain school fear moving in the night for fear of being sodomised,” he said.

Charles Bakkabulindi who represents workers in Parliament said some non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are involved in the promotion of homosexuality in schools.

These NGOs use teachers in these big schools to recruit the students into these activities. We need to curb this,” he said, adding, “measures need to be taken in order to curtail the growing vice in schools.”

The lower Madi County Member of Parliament (MP), Ronald Afidra Olema, said measures such as Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) being in full control of content on televisions need to be taken.

The TV stations especially through the cartoon channels are showing material promoting same sex. They need to be on board in curbing this vice,” he said.

Sarah Opendi who is the Tororo Woman MP said Parliament must provide leadership in the fight against homosexuality.

We should not shy away from this; we have a motion which we want in this House and we come up with recommendations on how to move forward,” she said, adding, “the Police, Judiciary and Parliament need to work together to fight this vice.”

Last week, a parent took to social media platforms saying that one of the teachers at Kings College Budo was sodomising his son.

The teacher of Kings College Budo has been sodomising my son for four years now. My son got problems going to the toilet so I took him to Mulago hospital because I have my relative doctor there. They found him with a sexually transmitted infection commonly found in gay men,” the post that went viral on social media read.

Authorities at the school, including members of the school board, however dismissed the letter as a forgery by people with ill intentions.

When asked on the matter, the old budonians club president, Jimmy Katenda, who is also a member of the school board of governors said the school’s top organ could not comment on the matter at the moment.
